Graston Technique

Dr. Rob Poliszuk: Graston Technique Provider

Graston Technique is a specialized manual therapy approach that utilizes stainless steel instruments to detect and treat soft tissue injuries and restrictions. As a Graston Technique Provider Dr. Rob is proud to offer the service to his patients.

Dr. Rob uses this technique to help patients recover from a variety of conditions, including:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Epicondylitis (tennis elbow or golfer's elbow)

  • Rotator cuff tears

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Shin splints

  • Fibromyalgia

How does Graston Technique Work?

Graston Technique works by stimulating the body's natural healing process. When the instruments are applied to the skin, they create sensory input that stimulates different types of nerve fibers in the affected tissues. These nerve fibers include those responsible for transmitting non-painful sensory information (A-beta fibers) as well as those responsible for transmitting pain signals (A-delta and C fibers). By applying specific pressure and movement with the instruments, the excitability of these nerve fibers can be modulated. This modulation leads to a decrease in the perception of pain, making the treatment more comfortable.

Furthermore, Graston Technique may trigger a localized inflammatory response in the treated area. This response releases substances like anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors, which play a role in tissue healing and remodeling. By promoting tissue healing, Graston Technique can contribute to the overall improvement of the condition being treated.

Graston Technique is a safe and effective treatment for a variety of soft tissue injuries and restrictions. It is a non-surgical option that can help patients recover faster and with less pain than traditional treatments. If you are suffering from a soft tissue injury, talk to your physical therapist about whether Graston Technique may be right for you.

Benefits of Graston Technique

  • Reduces pain

  • Improves range of motion

  • Speeds up recovery time

  • Improves function

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Promotes tissue healing

How is Graston Technique Performed?

Graston Technique is performed by a specially trained physical therapist. The therapist will use stainless steel instruments to apply pressure and movement to the affected tissues. The amount of pressure and movement will vary depending on the individual patient and the condition being treated.

Graston Technique is typically performed for 15-30 minutes per session. Treatments are usually scheduled 2-3 times per week for 2-4 weeks.

What Are The Risks of Graston Technique?

Graston Technique is a safe and effective treatment. However, there are some potential risks, including:

  • Bruising

  • Swelling

  • Pain

  • Irritation

  • Rash

These risks are exceedingly rare but if you are considering Graston Technique and want to feel fully comfortable with the process be sure to talk to your physical therapist about the risks and benefits beforehand.

Supporting Evidence

In case you needed more evidence regarding the effectiveness of Graston therapy, there have been numerous research articles produced about the instruments. Here are a couple of meta-analyses that discuss its efficacy:

  • Davidson et al. (2019): A meta-analysis involving 12 studies concluded that Graston therapy was associated with significant improvements in pain reduction, range of motion, and functional outcomes for various musculoskeletal conditions.

  • Cheatham et al. (2017): Another meta-analysis examining 10 studies on instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, including Graston therapy, demonstrated significant improvements in pain reduction, range of motion, and functional outcomes for patients with musculoskeletal conditions.

These meta-analyses provide strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of Graston therapy in promoting positive outcomes for patients. Dr. Rob incorporates these findings into his treatment approach, ensuring that you receive evidence-based care to maximize your potential for recovery and improved function.
