Case Study: Patellar Tendon Pain in a Pickup Basketballer

Case Study!

My patient Carlos came in with pain on the inside of his distal patellar tendon/Tibial tuberosity. This is the area when your quads and kneecap insert into the top of your shin!

You may have heard of Osgood’s Schlatter or even had it growing up. That’s that condition where your knee hurts because you grew too quick.

Well, in this case, the Covid lockdown (this was during that time) combined with a decrease in weight training led to imbalances in strength (namely the glutes, external rotators of the hips and quads) led to a biomechanical disadvantage which caused pain allllll the way down the chain in the lower leg.

Of course, there is more to look at in the appointments ahead but we saw such a nice improvement with hip and quad strengthening as well as soft tissue work and PNF quad stretching that we’re pretty sure we’re on the right path!
