Dowager’s Hump

Look at the miracles that my client had worked out in just a few weeks! A lifetime of forward head posture and rounded upper back led to the transition point between this patient’s upper back and lower neck to look like it was bulging out! Some people will refer to this as a dowager’s hump or buffalo hump 🐃 Kind if savage right? I feel like some practitioners may call it that to get you excited for surgery 😆
.
The cervico-thoracic junction is where the top of the thoracic spine (T1) and the bottom of the cervical spine (C7) come into contact with one another. This articulation point contains both of the previously mentioned vertebrae’s large spinous processes that jut out. With years of “poor” posture, sometimes people will develop fatty and tissue deposits in the region as a way to counteract the forces of a forward head creating that unsightly camel hump that many will try to get rid of via invasive surgery or injection.
.
Fortunately, we can use utilize specific exercises tailored towards upper back and neck posture strengthening as well as stretching to the affected tissues in order to improve the both the patient’s pain, posture and (usually for them) most importantly, the hump that forms in that region.
.
Over the course of the next couple weeks I will go over some of the exercises we tried from start to finish and how to incorporate them in order to reduce your own buffalo or dowager’s hump.
