"DO I NEED SURGERY?"…
Such a question is too vague to give a direct answer to the reader without first evaluating them in person. In my clinical experience though, the answer is simple:
Once all of the menacing pathology is ruled out, it is always best to try Physical Therapy first and address the issue conservatively.
Nearly everyone can benefit from Physical Therapy. PT is perfect in order to treat an underlying condition someone has had for years (e.g. chronic low back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain or knee pain), in order to avoid surgery (e.g. partial meniscectomy, discectomy, knee replacement, shoulder replacement) a corticosteroid injection (e.g. Cortizone, Prednisone or triamcinolone) or even save money on expensive imaging procedures such as an MRI.
All of the these procedures have their benefits and should each be invoked when medically necessary. The beauty of PT is that you can address what each of these more invasive techniques are meant to address or screen for and attack the symptoms directly.
For example, why get an MRI confirmation that you have arthritis in your knee when you could treat the condition conservatively and gain the necessary knowledge of self management techniques to reduce your pain without the invasive procedures.
The arthritis isn’t going anywhere and knowing that it is there is not going to make a difference because we aren’t going to get any crazy procedure done to it without trying PT first anyway.
Just focus on the process first and see the most likely scenario take place: a return to normal, or better than normal, function.
